Debunking Common Myths About COVID-19 Vaccines & Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy
Introduction
Yesterday I got my second dose of the life-saving vaccine that was created to protect ourselves and others.
So grateful.
Zero side effects.
I am grateful that so many of us have gotten vaccinated, and am hopeful that more people will choose to get the vaccine to help keep variants under control and protect us all.
Although there is a lot of information on the internet that debunks certain myths about the COVID vaccine, I was unable to find a comprehensive page addressing as many of them as possible. I have attempted to make a comprehensive document, with as many myths as I have heard about (though I acknowledge more are emerging, so it may not include all of them).
I have done extensive research on the vaccine and made a 221 page Google Doc with screenshots debunking common myths about the vaccine.
Here is the contents of this Google Doc, in case it is helpful to you or anyone you know. It is accurate as of May 28, 2021, according to my research (post-note: it does not include stuff about the Delta variant and any subsequent variants, so the likelihood of getting COVID now and passing it along is higher than what is written in this piece). I tried to use only highly reputable and credible sources, though I threw in some opinion pieces where they referenced reputable/credible sources in a neat/digestible way, and also included some other straight opinion pieces around ethics near the end. I have included links to sources under almost every image or group of images.
The likelihood sections near the top were written for someone in the age category of ages 20–39 in Ontario, and the probability calculations are done for that age group and location — but you can use the logic to find probabilities for your own age and location.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor — just a concerned citizen interested in the safety of all, and in helping combat misinformation and fake news. However, a friend of mine who is a family doctor reviewed much of this and they said it was “really well done”.
If you are looking for information from doctors, here is an excellent World Health Organization Mythbusters page https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/myth-busters
And here is a webinar with doctors addressing vaccine hesitancy https://nccid.ca/webcast/phac-addressing-covid-19-vaccine-hesitancy/
Now, here is my document.
Key findings re likelihoods:
- If you are in the age group of ages 20–39 and live in Ontario, you have a 1 in 20 chance of getting COVID. The chances of getting it are higher for many age groups and regions.
- If you get vaccinated, you would reduce your risk of getting COVID to a 0.005 in 100 chance
- If you get COVID, you have a 53% or greater chance of passing it on to someone in the household. So you statistically have a 1 in 40 chance of getting COVID then passing it to someone in the household.
- If you get vaccinated, you would cut your risk of getting it then passing it to someone in the household to 0.002 in 100.
This is explained more in the doc in the Likelihood sections.
It can take up to 14+ days after getting COVID for a COVID test to show up positive. This is explained more in the doc in the Test Timeline section.

Likelihood of getting COVID
-> Ontario’s population is 14.57 million. Age 20–39 is roughly 4 million (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Ontario)
There have been 197,230 cases in ages 20–39 — so you have a 1 in 20 chance of getting COVID
